Review: SteamWorld Heist II Aims to Please https://www.siliconera.com/review-steamworld-heist-ii-aims-to-please/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=review-steamworld-heist-ii-aims-to-please https://www.siliconera.com/review-steamworld-heist-ii-aims-to-please/#respond Thu, 01 Aug 2024 14:00:24 +0000 https://www.siliconera.com/?p=1044693 steamworld heist ii review

The SteamWorld series of games has been an exploration of disparate genres, with the team always careful about returning to ideas. But it does happen! Like Dig 2 before it, SteamWorld Heist II seeks to iterate upon the original’s mechanics with years of hindsight and extra development expertise.

Heist II moves from the first game’s space setting to an ocean one, with players navigating the world in a submarine. Functionally, these are very similar! So it feels a lot like the original. Instead of the menu-based approach of its predecessor, this entry takes a Mario + Rabbids approach, using an adventure overworld with light exploration and naval skirmishes.

This scheme is designed to break up the tactical combat with world-building, and the team at Thunderful tried hard to make it fun to explore the map even if the rewards aren’t always particularly consequential. You’ll find secret passages. You’ll encounter little narrative moments. The water effects as the sub zips around are satisfying. There’s even a diving mechanic that doesn’t really get explored until the late game but serves to give the world dimension.

steamworld heist ii review

But the primary attraction of SteamWorld Heist II is definitely the combat missions. In a lot of ways, they’re reminiscent of the first: areas composed of rooms and doors that are regularly re-used and configured, with a variety of obstacles and enemies to aim weapons through. We can forgive a lot of the iterative nature, though, given its role as a sequel and the way this system is distinct from all major tactical alternatives. It’s accurate enough to call it “2D XCOM,” but the 2D part of that does fundamentally set it apart in both presentation and tactics.

The combat is, more than anything, about action economy and finding tricks to take out more enemies at once and keep your head above water against enemy waves. Sidearms and grenades, along with class-specific abilities, allow you to attack more than once in a turn. Weapons with a large blast radius can hit more foes if placed right. Unlockable abilities can cause attacks to not end your turn or give you extra movement to reach objectives faster. This focus, again, feels a lot like Mario + Rabbids! Which is definitely a good thing. We found ourselves emptying our cupboard of extras each turn before finally using the characters’ primary weapons on whatever was left alive.

thunderful playtest character skill tree

There are multiple difficulty options in the game and you can change on the fly if needed, but if you’re having trouble with a particular stage, you can also grind for job levels and equipment. This isn’t a huge change to your power or capability, often just giving you slightly more survivability or one more skill. But that can be the difference between staying on top of enemy waves and finding yourself underwater.

The world is broken up into regions, which largely function as the game’s chapters and each feature a bar for resting, shops and narrative moments. Each party member can fight once before resting, which means you’ll eventually be able to fight a few times before returning, but that does build up over the game. Missions earn “renown,” a currency you cash in when you rest for rewards. If you’re able to use the whole team and do a lot in the same day, you’ll be able to redeem for the higher-value rewards. These aren’t necessary, but they’re usually quite nice to have. You also unlock a special passive reward for completing everything in a region. Again, not necessary, but you’ll want them and they’re not too tough to do.

steamworld heist ii review

You recruit new party members at these bars, each with the ability to learn any class, but carrying personal skills that could lean them toward particular strategies. You have some player freedom to recruit in different orders, eventually unlocking all ten, but with some choice of who you need first and who you can wait for until later when you have space in the crew. They’ll have little quips during missions to make them feel like a part of the story, but they’re mostly there to support protagonist Captain Leeway through his journey while he largely doesn’t participate in fights himself.

Heist II is, in a technical sense, a very smooth experience, which makes sense for a sequel to a game formulated to work within 3DS specs that’s releasing on all active platforms regardless of capability. We did review the game on PC, for what that’s worth, but it’s the sort of game that doesn’t feel like it’s trying anything that would trip up low-spec devices.

boss fight screenshot

SteamWorld Heist II takes the things that worked in the original Heist and, well, gives players more of them. It’s well-considered in so many ways, making sure you’ll have a good time exploring its ideas for as long as it holds you. It ain’t exciting or revolutionary, really, but it sure is fun.

SteamWorld Heist II launches August 8, 2024 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

World of Warships Will Get Blue Archive Crossover Content https://www.siliconera.com/world-of-warships-will-get-blue-archive-crossover-content/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=world-of-warships-will-get-blue-archive-crossover-content https://www.siliconera.com/world-of-warships-will-get-blue-archive-crossover-content/#respond Thu, 01 Aug 2024 13:30:44 +0000 https://www.siliconera.com/?p=1045475 World of Warships getting Blue Archive crossover

Wargaming has revealed that it will start adding new crossover content from Blue Archive to World of Warships. The content will appear in both the original PC version and the console-mobile release Legends in August 2024. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

This crossover will feature three exclusive warships and five characters that players can assign as ship captains. The five characters shown are Hoshino, Serika, Ayane, Shiroko, and Nonomi. As a side note, all of these five characters are affiliated with the Abydos High School's Foreclosure Task Force in the original game.

The Blue Archive crossover will mark a new collaboration between Wargaming and Yostar. While Nexon published the global version of Blue Archive, Yostar handles its Japanese and Chinese releases. The companies have been collaborating multiple times to add crossover content between Azur Lane and World of Warships. The new Japanese press release noted that this will be the first Blue Archive crossover wave, so the companies are also teasing more batches coming later on.

The Blue Archive crossover content will appear first in the console and mobile entry World of Warships: Legends, available on the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, iOS, and Android, on August 5, 2024. Wargaming will also add the content to the original PC version ten days later on August 15, 2024.

Kotobukiya to Sell Persona 5 Royal Kasumi Figure Again https://www.siliconera.com/kotobukiya-to-sell-persona-5-royal-kasumi-figure-again/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=kotobukiya-to-sell-persona-5-royal-kasumi-figure-again https://www.siliconera.com/kotobukiya-to-sell-persona-5-royal-kasumi-figure-again/#respond Thu, 01 Aug 2024 13:00:53 +0000 https://www.siliconera.com/?p=1045481 persona 5 royal yoshizawa kasumi figure kotobukiya

Kotobukiya will re-run the ARTFX figure of Kasumi Yoshizawa in her Phantom Thieves outfit in Persona 5 Royal. Pre-orders are open until September 24, 2024.

The figure costs 17,380 JPY ($128.20) and will ship out some time in February 2025. As a note, you’ll be able to buy the figure even after the pre-order period ends. However, there will no longer be a guarantee that you’ll be able to get it, since Kotobukiya will cut off orders after a certain amount. Incidentally, AmiAmi (which usually sells Kotobukiya items) has closed off its orders for this figure.

The scale figure of Kasumi Yoshizawa as she appears in Persona 5 Royal has a dynamic pose on a corridor with roses along the edges. She’s also holding a gymnastics ribbon in one hand and her mask in the other. The figure originally came out in November 2020 and at the time, it was available for 17,380 JPY. Her pose makes it look like she’s running, while looking off to the side, which is actually a direct parallel to the ARTFX Persona 5 Joker figure.

Persona 5 Royal is readily available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC. The ARTFX figure of Kasumi Yoshizawa from Persona 5 Royal is open for pre-order until September 24, 2024 and then it’ll come out in February 2025.

Bungie Announces New Round of Layoffs https://www.siliconera.com/bungie-announces-new-round-of-layoffs/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=bungie-announces-new-round-of-layoffs https://www.siliconera.com/bungie-announces-new-round-of-layoffs/#respond Wed, 31 Jul 2024 20:30:00 +0000 https://www.siliconera.com/?p=1045297 Destiny 2: The Final Shape's Pale Heart

On July 31, 2024, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons announced layoffs occurred at the studio responsible for Destiny, Destiny 2, and the upcoming Marathon extraction shooter. Roughly 220 roles, accounting for 17% of the workforce, will be eliminated.

The full statement, released on the official company news site, detailed that Bungie will shift the remaining work force entirely to focus on Destiny 2 and Marathon development. In addition, Parsons stated that a sizable portion of the team would be more deeply integrated into Sony Interactive Entertainment. Approximately 155 Bungie roles will be moved to Sony Interactive Entertainment directly over the next few quarters.

These new layoffs hit members of Bungie staff both in upper levels and lower levels of the company. Robert Brookes, a senior narrative designer who worked on Destiny 2 for five years and covered releases from 2020's Season of the Hunt to 2024's The Final Shape is one of the 220 individuals affected. The reason for the dismissals, according to Parsons, is that the company overstretched financial safety margins associated with spreading talent too thin and the "quality miss" of Destiny 2: Lightfall.

This announcement arrived midway through the newest Destiny 2 story chapter called Echoes, which followed The Final Shape. Parsons noted in the statement that 850 team members remain. This is the second round of layoffs in recent memory at Bungie, with the other occurring in October of 2023.

No statements were made as to what this means for the current plans for Destiny 2's future content. Parsons said, "There will be a time to talk about our goals and projects, but today is not that day."

Destiny 2 is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

The First Descendant First Update Adds New Character Luna https://www.siliconera.com/the-first-descendant-first-update-adds-new-character-luna/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-first-descendant-first-update-adds-new-character-luna https://www.siliconera.com/the-first-descendant-first-update-adds-new-character-luna/#respond Wed, 31 Jul 2024 18:00:00 +0000 https://www.siliconera.com/?p=1045309 First Descendant Luna

The first update for The First Descendant is live. It brings new characters, a new boss fight and new equipment, along with fixes and other improvements.

The highlight of the first update is the introduction of two new characters for The First Descendant. The first of these is Luna, a Support character whose weapon utilises rhythm game mechanics, allowing her to deal damage by shooting in time with the music. Her musical accompaniment also provides bonuses for teammates, increasing their Skill Power and MP Recovery and decreasing cooldowns. A full character trailer for her has also been released.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4qh46f0xOU

The other new character addition is Ultimate Valby, a version of the game’s aquatic environmentalist Valby, with boosted stats and a new look. She also gains two unique Modification Modules.

The first update also adds a new Void Intercept Battle to The First Descendant. This sees players going up against Gluttony, a giant mech. Defeating it rewards players with the Hungry Sonic External Components Set and a blueprint for the new Ultimate Weapon, Peace Maker. This new weapon comes with an effect that allows for burst shots while aiming.

The update has also had a huge list of improvements, the full details of which can be viewed on the official site. In addition, director Minseok Joo discussed plans for future updates. These include balance changes to allow for a wider diversity of character builds, plus improvements to drop rates. The team is also working on a method to dispose of unwanted items in response to community criticism.

The First Descendant is available now for PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

Review: There’s More Than Meets the Eye in Kitsune Tails https://www.siliconera.com/review-theres-more-than-meets-the-eye-in-kitsune-tails/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=review-theres-more-than-meets-the-eye-in-kitsune-tails https://www.siliconera.com/review-theres-more-than-meets-the-eye-in-kitsune-tails/#respond Wed, 31 Jul 2024 16:00:00 +0000 https://www.siliconera.com/?p=1045216 Review: Kitsune Tails Is More Than Meets the Eye

I have to be honest and admit that my first impression of Kitsune Tails didn’t have me fully on board with the premise. Perhaps it was the very obvious similarities with other platforming games or how the game expects a certain level of precision and mastery immediately. However, as I made my way through it, I started to experience a full 180 degrees change in attitude and discovered that not everything was as straightforward as it seemed.

Kitsune Tails is a platformer game cut from the same cloth as classics like Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World, borrowing elements such as the way the level select maps look and the mid-world Spirit Houses that double as the mid-world castle challenges and Ghost Houses from SMW. Even the run meter from SMB3 makes an appearance as the Ki gauge in the upper right corner. I admittedly don’t love how close to this particular cloth Kitsune Games cuts. What I love is how this aspect of the game is only about 40% of the whole experience, and halfway through the developer pulled the wool from over my eyes and revealed that Kitsune Tails is also a completely different platformer closer to something like classic Ninja Gaiden.

The story of Kitsune Tails is a tad more involved than is usual for the genre. If I had to summarize the plot in one sentence, it would be “clueless disaster lesbian Kitsune causes geopolitical crisis, and a disaster ensues.” The focus for most of the game lies on Yuzu, a Kitsune on her first mission as a messenger for the fox deity Inari. On one of her reckless travels, Yuzu is rescued by the mage and healer Akko, who rapidly catches feelings for our protagonist.

As the seasons go by and the two get closer, Yuzu’s longtime friend Kiri starts to show jealousy about the girls’ growing bond. Kiri is ready to make a grand gesture to reveal her feelings to Yuzu during a dance festival. In the ensuing confusion Akko is captured, with Kiri as the main suspect. Yuzu embarks on a trip to commune with the five elements to free Akko from her entrapment, figure out why Kiri captured her friend, and if it had to do with her feelings of jealousy. I really appreciate seeing Kitsune Tails handle the conflict of three overtly queer friends learning to understand their feelings for each other and communicating them, while also seeing some asexual representation in the mix.

As a rule of thumb, I try to avoid comparing titles I review with other games as much as possible, as I prefer to explain the inner workings of a game on its own merits. However, there is too much of Super Mario World in Kitsune Tails. I think that my feelings towards the first half of this game come from how derivative it feels from this formula. For a good chunk of the game there is little variation to how enemies and power ups work compared to Mario, and when Kitsune Tails tries its own spin on a classic Mario mechanic it is often not to the best results. As an example, salamander and snowman suit power ups very similar to the ice flower and the fire flower from Mario games get introduced very late into the game. This means that the early game leaves you with your basic jump to fend off enemies and more situational power ups that don’t feel as useful or critical for that part of the game.

Similarly, the aforementioned Ghost Houses include ghost enemies similar to Boos. While they are similar to Boos these ghosts act differently, and you’re only safe from them as long as you’re inside the light of nearby fires. While I appreciate the variation in design, it’s not as balanced a threat as Boos, as these ghosts usually hover around your last position and there is no way to stop them unless you have a source of light, making them feel more unfair. Coupled with the fact that these enemies appear on levels with moving platforms or vertical levels, it makes for some of the most tricky in the game.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Aside from enemies and power ups, the demanding level design is definitely a step up from your average Mario game. Some levels are short and sweet and manage to scratch the itch for that platforming goodness Kitsune Tails is so eagerly and lovingly trying to recreate, while other levels go on for too long, feeling like two challenging levels stitched together. The frustration of very long challenging levels can be increased when checkpoints are sparse, making you start from very early into the level after dying. This is only really a problem when playing on the highest difficulty, or playstyle as the game calls it, as you can easily use power ups stored in your inventory to replenish your defenses in the other 2 available playstyles. Additionally, you can spend coins in the small hub village to purchase power ups.

Despite my criticisms, some levels shine through their creativity and fun design. I found the entirety of World 4 to be brilliant and a breath of fresh air. Having access to the ice power up means that you can stun nearby enemies and create platforms to make your way up very fun vertical sections. This felt like an appropriate level of challenge, as I had an effective way to defend myself without the game pulling any type of “gotchas” on me. Not to mention that what I have described above is only true for half of the game’s run, as you make your way through the 6 worlds in offer.

After completing the game, you are given access to a special character that can’t use the power ups that Yuzu can. Instead, this character has a completely unique moveset that revolves around swordplay, hitting enemies to refresh traversal attack skills, and flowing through the levels swiftly and precisely. This second part of the game absolutely, positively, immensely rules. I couldn’t stop myself from playing once I reached this point. Even though you go through the same levels again, the difficulties I previously had in some levels disappeared as the new playstyle instantly clicked with me.

I think this unique playstyle is what makes this second half so special, and I would have liked to see Yuzu play in a more unique way than Mario, with her power ups being something she learns in each world and can use with a different degree of freedom. I kept thinking about this when I unlocked the adorable shark suit power up, and how I would have preferred if it was an innate ability in the character’s arsenal, as it would have made the water stages fairer, in addition to helping the game distinguish itself more from Super Mario.

The pixel art in Kitsune Tails is as lovely as you’d expect, and every character and enemy have distinct designs that are easy to clock, even if you have never encountered before. Walking and flying beetles are the equivalent to Goombas and their flying variations, with armadillos being akin to Koopa Troopas, and so on and so forth. The music is fun and playful, borrowing from the style of the NES and Super Nintendo. Perhaps the most impressive element of Kitsune Tails is that the game also includes its own “Kitsune Maker,” featuring a level editor using the Lua script language used to develop the game, as well as the plenty of minigames available.

Kitsune Tails presents itself as a charming homage to classic NES and SNES era platformers with an adorable Queer story, and hides underneath a deep and challenging double album of platforming goodness with a second campaign focused on speed and precise movement, all the while featuring a simple level editor to boot. Despite borrowing a little too much from some classic platformers, I feel like genre fans and speedrunners are going to have a field day with Kitsune Tails.

Kitsune Tails will come to the PC via Steam and itch.io on August 1, 2024.

Elden Ring Balance Adjustments for Patch Notes for 1.13 https://www.siliconera.com/elden-ring-balance-adjustments-for-patch-notes-for-1-13/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=elden-ring-balance-adjustments-for-patch-notes-for-1-13 https://www.siliconera.com/elden-ring-balance-adjustments-for-patch-notes-for-1-13/#respond Tue, 30 Jul 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://www.siliconera.com/?p=1045146 Elden Ring 1.13 Patch Notes

FromSoftware has released the patch notes for Elden Ring version 1.13, which includes a series of balance adjustments and bug fixes across all platforms. The patch introduces several PvP-exclusive changes to improve the balance of PvP combat.

Key changes include increased poise damage for normal attacks with Light Great Swords, Backhand Blades, Hand-to-Hand Arts, and Beast Claws. Dual wield attacks with Straight Swords, Thrusting Swords, Curved Swords, Katanas, Spears, Whips, Fists, and Claws have also seen increased poise damage. Several spells and incantations have also been modified, including Miriam's Vanishing and Knight's Lightning Spear.

The patch also includes general balance changes affecting both PvE and PvP. Light Greatsword charge attacks now have increased damage against non-player enemies. Summoned NPCs such as Needle Knight Leda, Pureblood Knight Ansbach, and Thiollier have received stat and status boosts. Summoned spirits, except for the Mimic Tear, have increased attack power and damage negation when upgraded.

Several armaments, including the Repeating Crossbow, Spread Crossbow, and Rabbath's Cannon, have improved attack power scaling when upgraded. The Shield of Night now has increased damage negation for physical attacks, while Euporia has enhanced Holy damage and a shorter restoration process.

Following up on previous concerns, this patch includes the correction of the end credits by adding missing translations. The patch also addresses issues with FP consumption, spell casting behaviors, and multiplayer area borders.

Elden Ring and the DLC Expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, are available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and PC via steam.

Stray Cat Figures Arrive in November https://www.siliconera.com/stray-cat-figures-arrive-in-november/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=stray-cat-figures-arrive-in-november https://www.siliconera.com/stray-cat-figures-arrive-in-november/#respond Tue, 30 Jul 2024 21:30:00 +0000 https://www.siliconera.com/?p=1045103 Stray Indie Game Figures Xbox

Happinet announced a new line of capsule toys featuring cat figures from the indie game Stray. These gacha toys will be available starting in November 2024 at capsule toy stores nationwide in Japan for 500 yen (~$3.30) each.

The collection captures the various poses of the game's feline protagonist, including the cat walking, sitting, and stretching/yawning. In each one, the character has the signature pack on as well.

You can view the official announcement post below, which included a look at the four items someone could possibly get.

In addition to the cat figures, the lineup will also include the cat's companion B-12 as a keychain. This partnership is a key part of the game's narrative. These Stray cat figures, along with the B-12 keychain, will be available randomly. That means you won't know which one you'll get when you pull on the machine.

Stray received several nominations at the 2023 Game Developers Choice Awards, including Best Debut, Best Audio, Best Design, Best Visual Art, and Game of the Year. A Switch version is also in development. However, there's no release date for it yet.

Stray is available on the PS4, PS5, and PC, the cat figures will appear in Japan in November 2024, and the game will also come to the Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

That last trailer was also when Goku (Super) Ultra Instinct -Sign- and Goku Black Super Saiyan Rose showed up.

New FFXIV Data Center Travel and World Visit Regulations Added https://www.siliconera.com/new-ffxiv-data-center-travel-and-world-visit-regulations-added/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=new-ffxiv-data-center-travel-and-world-visit-regulations-added https://www.siliconera.com/new-ffxiv-data-center-travel-and-world-visit-regulations-added/#respond Tue, 30 Jul 2024 19:00:00 +0000 https://www.siliconera.com/?p=1045059 New FFXIV Data Center Travel and World Visit Regulations Added

As of patch 7.05, Square Enix announced two new regulations for the FFXIV Data Center Travel and World Visit system based on congested worlds. While the World Visit Login Capacity doesn’t really change in either situation, the Data Center Travel Login Capacity can.

The new designations both apply to FFXIV Standard Worlds Data Center Travel Login Capacity and World Visit Login Capacity. If there are no Congested Worlds in a Logical Data Center, then the capacity will remain standard. However, if there is even one Congested World present, then the Data Center Travel Login Capacity will be greatly reduced. The only time World Visit Login Capacity seems to drop, as usual, remains when a World is classified as Congested.

Square Enix also released the latest lists of Congested, Standard, and Preferred Worlds for FFXIV. Here’s how the most recent changes for some select worlds all look for each region. Not that there are no changes for Oceania.

Europe:

Congested Standard Preferred
Cerberus Alpha
Lich Phantom
Louisoix Raiden
Omega Sagittarius
Ragnarok
Spriggan
Twintania
Zodiark

As of time of writing, the worlds Innocence, Pixie, Titania, and Tycoon were all classified as Congested. All of the worlds listed above are on Chaos and Light.

Japan:

Congested Standard Preferred
Fenrir Anima Aegis
Tiamat Carbuncle Belias
Mandragora Gungnir
Masamune Kujata
Pandaemonium Valefor
Ramuh
Shinryu
Tonberry
Typhon

Both Fenrir and Tiamat are Gaia Worlds.

North America:

Congested Standard Preferred
Seraph Exodus
Famfrit
Goblin
Hyperion
Lamia
Malboro
Mateus
Zalera

Seraph is the only Dynamis congested world. Cuchulainn, Golem, Halicarnassus, Kraken, Maduin, Marilith, and Rafflesia are all still showing as “new.” This is because this is the latest North American Data Center.

Final Fantasy XIV is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
